While in the past centuries most well-known was the marriage based on interest, negotiated between the future spouses’ families, today predominant in most countries is marriage based on love. From the social point of view, the essence of marriage – which distinguished the relationship created through justae nuptiae from the one created through cohabitation – was in the Roman law – social rank equality, appearing from marriage between man and woman, on one side, parents and children, on the other.
