Abstract:
In the last decades, libraries faced a fast-growing challenge: digitalization. The institutions have to adapt to the new management and visitor needs, which makes them more open to the public and efficient in serving society. To accomplish this, the management of the institutions has to make strategies that include digitalizing the existing library catalogs, making them available online, hosting book-related events, and adjusting the existing library building codes to the new demands. The developing countries don’t have the resources to transform accordingly to the new requirements and encounter a diminishing number of active readers. The libraries of Moldova make attempts of dealing with these challenges, but require updating the national building codes concerning libraries, as they have not been amended since the Soviet times. This article aims to identify which changes have to be made to the approach of the management and how the existing building code concerning libraries have to be adjusted for making libraries in the Republic of Moldova and other East-European countries modern and attractive to the public.
