Abstract:
This article explores the implementation and impact of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in the European Union, particularly under the framework of EU Directive 2010/40/EU. The directive addresses challenges in transportation, such as congestion, environmental impact, and road safety, by promoting the deployment of intelligent technologies. The text analyses the key objectives, mandatory requirements, and envisioned benefits of the directive, highlighting its role in modernizing transportation networks. Additionally, it delves into the impact of ITS on-traffic flow, road safety, sustainability, intermodal connectivity, and economic benefits, providing statistics from various EU member states. The discussion extends to influential EU documents shaping the ITS landscape beyond the directive, and potential future visions of ITS in the EU. Finally, it assesses the opportunities, challenges, and costs of implementing ITS for the Republic of Moldova, a candidate for EU accession, emphasizing the strategic role ITS can play in aligning with EU policies and fostering sustainable development.
