Abstract:
This article explores aspects of the aesthetics of the traditional Romanian ia
(traditional women’s blouse), as well as ways of preserving its value and legacy. The ia, one of
the most important elements of Romanian national dress, which carries in its cut and its
ornamental compositions ancient techniques and elements, as well as artistic achievements of
outstanding value, has been and still is highly appreciated internationally. The International
Day of the Romanian Ia has been marked since 2013 (June 24) with 48 countries adopting it.
The Romanian ia currently attracts significant interest, and is used in modern clothing together
with skirts and pants; however, we do not want to see a depreciation of the aesthetic aspect as
a result of improperly applied or ignorance of the techniques, or improperly placed ornaments.
To avoid false interpretations through the use of various ia-inspired imitations and
improvisations, an education of traditional aesthetics is necessary to make sure characteristic
elements are understood and learned, and the quality of workmanship and used materials is
understood.
