Abstract:
A few new technologies have appeared in the field of biological wastewater treatment during the last few years. Combined anaerobic and aerobic wastewater treatment can be considered one of them. Such an integrated system appears to be one of the possible ways for treatment of wastewater, including from small sources. This paper presents a generalized assessment of when anaerobic pretreatment can be cost-effectively applied, following brief overviews of the contrast between aerobic and anaerobic biological treatment and of anaerobic treatment alternatives.
