Abstract:
In order to determine the optimal level of the apple orchard density, in spring 2008, it was established a field experiment with different planting distances: 4,0 x 1,5 m; 3,0 x 1,0 m; 3,0 x 0,66 m and 3,0 x 0,33 m. The study included the apple varieties Golden Delicious end Idared grafted on the rootstock M-9. High density planting contributed to increase the yield by 44-51% in the first years when the trees bear fruits. However, the variant with the highest density (10 000 trees/ha) also caused a decrease in fruit quality affecting especially their size. The optimal planting distance, which provided a high yield of quality fruits of the apple trees grafted on the rootstock M-9, was of 3.0 x 0.66 m, or 5000 trees/ha.
